Philippines says China Coast Guard injured sailor with baton
The Philippines accused China Coast Guard personnel of aggressively striking and wounding a navy serviceman with a wooden baton in the South China Sea, escalating tensions just before a meeting in Manila between the nations’ top diplomats this week.
The Philippine military said of its navy staffers had suffered a serious head injury after an encounter Monday with the China Coast Guard in Second Thomas Shoal, where the Southeast Asian nation maintains a military outpost.
The incident prompted a strong response from the U.S. State Department, which condemned China’s actions and urged it to “immediately cease its destabilizing conduct.”
