Mercury hits 35 C in Tokyo, marking first ‘extremely hot’ day of the year

The rainy season has likely ended in regions including Tokyo and Nagoya, the weather agency said Monday, with the Japanese capital marking the first “extremely hot” day of the year as the mercury hit 35 C.

Most of Japan was placed on alert for heatstroke on the final day of a three-day weekend. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, temperatures reached 30 C or higher at more than 600 of its 914 observation points on Monday morning.

The rainy season came to an end about 22 days later than last year in the Kanto-Koshin region including Tokyo, and 23 days later in the Tokai region centering on Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture.

The announcement came after the rainy season was declared over in the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan on July 13.

High temperatures are expected in western and eastern Japan this week, with 37 degrees forecast for Tokyo and 40 degrees for Nagoya, according to the agency.
