Japan Household Spending Spikes & Wages Decline

Japanese household spending increased by 1.8% in September compared to the previous year, according to government data released on Friday. This figure was slightly below the expected 2.5% rise projected by the market. On a seasonally adjusted basis, month-on-month spending saw a decrease of 0.7%, contrasting with the anticipated 0.1% decline as reported by the internal affairs ministry.

The Bank of Japan closely monitors consumption and wage patterns as crucial indicators to gauge the timing of any potential interest rate adjustments. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized this week that Japan is only halfway towards achieving sustained and stable price growth supported by substantial wage increases. Indicating a preference for a gradual approach, she suggests caution in raising interest rates.

Real wages in Japan, adjusted for inflation, continued to decline in September for the ninth consecutive month. The increase in prices has outpaced nominal wage growth, presenting a challenge for workers in maintaining purchasing power. To combat the impact of inflation, Rengo, Japan’s largest labor union group, announced plans to negotiate wage hikes of 5% or higher in 2026. This initiative aims to secure significant pay increases for the fourth year in a row.

In a separate development, UA Zensen, the largest industrial union group in Japan, disclosed its intention to push for a 6% salary increase during negotiations next year. This target mirrors the baseline set for this year’s discussions, reflecting a unified effort among labor organizations to address wage disparities and support workers’ financial well-being. As the country navigates economic challenges, these proposed wage hikes could provide relief to employees grappling with rising living costs.
