High-profile J&K politician accused of threatening journalist’s life; police complaint filed

A journalist in Jammu & Kashmir has filed a police complaint after receiving death threats from a high-profile politician who is a Z-category protectee and former minister. The journalist, who works for a national publication, reported that the threats were made during a WhatsApp call, where the politician hurled insults and threatened to have him eliminated within 48 hours of the appointment of the new Director General of Police (DGP) in J&K.

The politician, allegedly known for his vast influence and history of allegedly intimidating media personnel, expressed frustration, claiming he had “tolerated” the journalist for the past five years.

In response, the journalist immediately notified local authorities, including the Jammu & Kashmir Police, the Cyber Police, and the Press Council of India, emphasizing that the politician should be held accountable if any harm came to him.

“I have filed a formal complaint with the police. If they do not take action, I will escalate the matter to the High Court,” the journalist stated.

This incident has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in the region and the ongoing challenges they face when reporting on powerful political figures.

This incident comes on the heels of the successful completion of all three phases of the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections
