Driver arrested for causing fatal accident while riding under the influence of alcohol

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and dangerous driving resulting in death after he rear-ended a motorbike, causing the death of a 53-year-old man riding it, in Osaka.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the Hanshin Expressway in Chuo Ward, NTV reported. Police received a call from a passerby saying that “a man and a motorcycle were lying on the road” on the Hanshin Expressway Loop Line.

The man was identified as Masaaki Ushida, a 53-year-old company employee from Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture. He was transported to the hospital in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, but was later pronounced dead.

Police arrested Kota Maruoka, a 22-year-old company employee residing in Higashi-Osaka City, on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in death and violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving). A blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit was detected in Maruoka’s system.

Police said Maruoka told them he was on his way home after drinking at a bar when he rear-ended the motorbike.
