Typhoon No. 15 set to hit Honshu

Typhoon No. 15, following an unusual path, is expected to hit Japan’s main island of Honshu on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast on Monday.

Residents in the Kanto and southern Tohoku regions should be on alert for heavy rain, violent winds and high waves, the agency said.

The typhoon’s atmospheric pressure is about 990 hectopascals, with a maximum wind speed of 108 kph, the agency said.

Currently located over the ocean east of Japan, the typhoon is moving from east to west — an atypical trajectory. There is a high probability that the storm will make landfall in the Kanto or southern Tohoku regions on Tuesday night, the agency said.

If it makes landfall in Fukushima or Ibaraki prefectures, it will be the first time such an event has occurred since record-keeping began.

The agency is warning people to remain vigilant against heavy rain-related hazards such as landslides and high waves, and be aware of potential disruptions to transportation services.
