Trump demands ICE restart traffic stops after Maine killing

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday abandoned a day-old decision to halt most immigration traffic stops after President Donald Trump demanded that the tactic continue despite the fatal shooting of a man during an enforcement operation in Maine.

A DHS official said that in line with the president’s directive, the practice would resume, effectively scrapping a policy announced Tuesday that had suspended most vehicle stops except in serious criminal cases while the agency reviewed its policies and new-officer training.

“We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!” Trump wrote on social media on Wednesday morning. “Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal’s hands.”
